Jussie Smollett‘s conviction in an alleged hate crime hoax was overturned on Thursday by the Illinois Supreme Court docket.
The “Empire” actor was convicted in December 2021 of 5 felony counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly staging a hate crime in opposition to himself and was sentenced the next 12 months to 150 days in county jail. In December 2023, his bid for an attraction was denied.
“We’re conscious that this case has generated important public curiosity and that many individuals had been dissatisfied with the decision of the unique case and believed it to be unjust,” the court docket’s opinion reads, in accordance with the Chicago Tribune. “However, what can be extra unjust than the decision of anyone legal case can be a holding from this court docket that the State was not certain to honor agreements upon which individuals have detrimentally relied.”
